Common iOS Errors and How to Fix Them
When restoring, updating, or connecting your iPhone or iPad, you may see numeric errors from iTunes, Finder, or i4Tools. This page explains common iOS errors and practical steps to fix them, often with the help of i4Tools.
Connection & Recognition Errors
Error 401 – Unauthorized / Connection
Usually related to authentication or connection between the device and computer.
- Unlock your iPhone or iPad and tap Trust This Computer if prompted.
- Use a different USB cable and port (preferably USB 2.0).
- Restart your device and computer, then try again with i4Tools or iTunes.
- Update iTunes (Windows/Mac) or install Apple Mobile Device Support so drivers are current.
Device Not Detected / No Response
If i4Tools or iTunes does not see your device:
- Install or reinstall iTunes to get the correct Apple drivers.
- Try another cable and USB port; avoid hubs if possible.
- Trust the computer on the device and keep the screen unlocked.
- See our FAQ and Getting Started for more steps.
Restore & Update Errors
Error 3194
Often caused by the device trying to restore to an iOS version that Apple is no longer signing, or by hosts file / network blocking.
- You cannot restore to an iOS version that Apple has stopped signing. Choose the latest signed version in i4Tools or iTunes.
- Check that your hosts file does not block Apple’s servers (e.g. gs.apple.com). Restore the default hosts if you changed it for previous jailbreaks.
- Use a stable network and try again, or try another computer.
Error 9 / Error 4013 / Error 4014
Common during restore; usually related to connection or hardware.
- Use a different USB cable (ideally original or MFi-certified) and a direct USB port on the computer.
- Close other apps that might use the device; only run i4Tools or iTunes.
- Put the device in DFU or Recovery Mode and try restore again.
- If it keeps failing, try another computer or have the device checked for hardware issues.
Error 14
Often a communication or driver issue during restore.
- Update iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support (or reinstall iTunes).
- Switch USB cable and port; avoid hubs.
- Disable security software temporarily and retry the restore.
Error 4005
Can indicate a problem during the restore process (software or connection).
- Try a different cable and port, and close other USB-related software.
- Put the device in DFU mode and restore again using i4Tools or iTunes.
Using i4Tools to Reduce or Bypass Some Errors
i4Tools can sometimes succeed where iTunes fails because it uses its own flashing and connection logic. Steps to try:
- Download and install i4Tools for your OS.
- Connect your iPhone or iPad and ensure it is recognized.
- Use the Flash / Restore (or similar) option and choose the correct firmware.
- Follow the on-screen steps; keep the cable connected and do not use the device until the process finishes.
For full guidance, see Firmware Flashing and DFU and Recovery Mode.
