DFU Mode and Recovery Mode Guide
When your iPhone or iPad is stuck, won’t update, or shows the connect-to-iTunes screen, you may need Recovery Mode or DFU (Device Firmware Update) Mode. This guide explains both and how to use them with i4Tools or iTunes to restore your device.
What Is Recovery Mode?
Recovery Mode is a special state where the device can be recognized by a computer for restore. You usually see a cable pointing to an iTunes/Finder icon on the screen. Use it when:
- The device is stuck on the Apple logo or won’t start.
- iTunes or i4Tools says “iPhone needs to be restored.”
- An update or restore failed and the device is in a bad state.
What Is DFU Mode?
DFU Mode is a deeper level than Recovery Mode. The screen stays black (no Apple logo, no “connect to iTunes” graphic). Use it when:
- Recovery Mode restore didn’t work or failed repeatedly.
- You need to downgrade or flash a specific firmware (within Apple’s signing rules).
- Jailbreak or advanced tools require DFU.
In DFU, the device does not load the full iOS—only the low-level bootloader—so the computer can send a new firmware image.
How to Enter Recovery Mode
Steps vary slightly by model. Keep the device connected to the computer via USB before starting.
iPhone 8, iPhone X, and newer (including iPhone 15, and iPads with Face ID)
- Press and release Volume Up.
- Press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold Side (Power) button until the “connect to iTunes” (or cable) screen appears.
- Release the Side button. The device is now in Recovery Mode.
iPhone 7 / iPhone 7 Plus
- Hold Volume Down and Side (Power) button together.
- Keep holding until the “connect to iTunes” screen appears.
- Release both buttons.
iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad with Home button
- Hold Home and Power (Side or Top) together.
- Keep holding until the “connect to iTunes” screen appears.
- Release both buttons.
How to Enter DFU Mode
Timing is important. The screen must end up completely black (no logo, no “connect to iTunes”).
iPhone 8, iPhone X, and newer
- Connect the device to the computer; open i4Tools or iTunes.
- Press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
- Press and hold Side button for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black.
- Without releasing the Side button, also press Volume Down for 5 seconds.
- Release the Side button but keep holding Volume Down for about 5 more seconds.
- If the screen stays black and the computer detects the device in DFU, you’re done. If the Apple logo or “connect to iTunes” appears, repeat the steps.
iPhone 7 / iPhone 7 Plus
- Hold Side button and Volume Down together for about 10 seconds.
- Release the Side button but keep holding Volume Down for about 5 more seconds.
- The screen should stay black; the computer should detect the device in DFU.
iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad with Home button
- Hold Home and Power together for about 10 seconds.
- Release the Power button but keep holding Home for about 5 more seconds.
- The screen should stay black; the computer should detect the device in DFU.
Restoring with i4Tools
Once the device is in Recovery or DFU mode:
- Open i4Tools and connect your device.
- Wait until the device is recognized (Recovery or DFU).
- Use the Flash / Restore (or similar) option.
- Choose the firmware (usually “Latest” or the version i4Tools suggests).
- Start the restore and keep the cable connected until it finishes.
Restore will erase all data on the device. If you have a backup, you can restore it after the iOS restore. See Backup & Restore and Firmware Flashing.
Exiting Recovery or DFU Mode
If you change your mind and don’t want to restore:
- Recovery Mode: Hold the Side (or Power) button until the device restarts. You may need to try a few times.
- DFU Mode: Hold Side (or Power) and Home (or Volume Down on iPhone 7) together for about 10 seconds until the device restarts.
